Anja Mlakar graduated from the prestigious Womenswear MA at Central St Martins in 2010 with her ‘Blue Tube’ collection: A parade of electric blue and black sculpted female forms from the future (or Stingray) that would not look out of place alongside an Anish Kapoor. Mlakar claims to be inspired by the surrealist underwater worlds of artist Saskia Olde Wolbers but despite references to contemporary art and her interest in dreams and the non-logical Mlakar is a purist for her constructs have a conceptual 3D focused aesthetic.
She redefines the female form through elongation and exaggeration of the silhouette (so it is no surprise that she has already attracted the masked eye of Gaga) but preserving clean-cut lines. This is achieved by playfully stretching jersey over tubing. Mlakar's designs are sensual, feminine and generate a new breed of elegance.
This neo-elegance is fine tuned in Mlakar’s SS11 collection by a softer colour palette and an exploration into the nuances of the basic form which she builds upon with intricate laser cut layers and delicate folds.
